We design how spaces feel after dark
Most spaces are designed for daylight and merely lit at night.
The result is an interior that photographs well, reads cleanly in the morning, and feels somehow diminished by nine in the evening. Flat. Overlit. Ordinary. Not because the architecture is wrong, or the design is weak, but because the light was never really thought about.
That is the problem we exist to solve.
What sets us apart
Chiaroscuro Lighting is a creative lighting consultancy. We design the emotional life of a space after dark. We shape atmosphere, hierarchy, and mood using light as a design layer rather than a finishing detail.
We work with architects, interior designers, and private clients on projects where how a space feels in the evening is considered as seriously as how it looks in the day.
What We Do
We do not lead with fittings, lumens, or control systems.
We lead with atmosphere. With the emotional intent of a space. With the question of how this room should feel at ten o’clock on a Tuesday evening when the family is together, or at six on a winter night when the house is quiet.
Once that is understood, everything else follows.
The work
Our work sits at the intersection of creative design and strategic thinking. We are not a supply business. We are not a general lighting contractor. We are a consultancy, and the service we provide is clarity about what a space could become after dark and a disciplined path to realising it.
In practice, that means four stages.
Vision Session
The starting point for every project.
A paid strategic consultation in which we examine how the space should feel in the evening. We look at mood, hierarchy, lived use, and where the project may currently be at risk of becoming flat or generic once daylight disappears.
You leave with a clear written summary, a sharper view of the opportunity, and a confident basis for deciding how to proceed.
The Vision Session is not a free introductory call with some design thoughts attached. It is a serious first engagement. Its purpose is to replace vagueness with direction.
Concept Design
A full after dark design direction for the project.
We develop the layered lighting concept for each space. Atmosphere, visual hierarchy, material response, scene logic, the relationship between inside and outside. Everything needed to understand how the scheme will feel before anything is specified or committed.
The Concept Design is the intellectual and creative core of the engagement. It is where the work takes shape.
Design Realisation Support
A concept without protection is a concept at risk.
We offer continued involvement through the delivery phase to ensure that what was designed is what gets built. This includes coordination with contractors, response to site questions, and careful oversight of the moments that matter most.
After Dark Review
A final refinement stage once the project is complete and in use.
Even the best delivered schemes benefit from adjustment once the space is being lived in. The After Dark Review gives the project a considered final layer, and gives the client a home that feels exactly as it should.
Who We Work With
We are not for everyone, and we do not try to be.
The clients and collaborators who get the most from working with us share a common quality. They care about how a space feels, not just how it functions. They understand that quality of environment is not a luxury layer, it is a design outcome worth pursuing properly.
Architects
We work with architects on residential projects where the standard of the design deserves a standard of lighting to match.
Our involvement is most valuable when it begins early. We bring strategic after dark thinking into the design process before lighting decisions become constrained by what has already been fixed. We protect spatial hierarchy, architectural presence, and the relationship between inside and outside once daylight disappears.
We speak the language of the project, not the language of a supplier.
Interior Designers
A scheme that reads beautifully by day and collapses at night has not been finished. It has been abandoned at the hardest moment.
We work with interior designers to ensure that mood, materiality, and visual rhythm carry into the evening. The texture of a wall, the warmth of a timber, the depth of a fabric. These things need light to perform, and they need the right light. We design around the scheme rather than over it.
Private Clients
For private clients undertaking a significant new build or renovation, we offer a route into the project that most will never have considered before.
Not fittings. Not layouts. A genuine conversation about how the home should feel at night. How it supports daily life, entertaining, retreat, and the particular qualities of the spaces that matter most. We help you see what is being missed and give you a clear path to getting it right.
Landscape Designers
The space beyond the glass is part of the home.
We design outdoor lighting that extends the interior atmosphere into the landscape. Gardens, terraces, and exterior architecture that remain present, composed, and alive after dark rather than disappearing into darkness or flattened by functional uplighting.
Hospitality Operators
In hospitality, lighting carries commercial weight.
A restaurant, hotel, or members club that feels right in the evening creates something a guest cannot easily explain and cannot easily forget. We design the atmosphere that makes that possible.
How It Works
Every Chiaroscuro Lighting engagement follows the same disciplined path. It begins with strategic clarity. It builds through considered design. It ends with a space that performs exactly as intended after dark.
01 — Enquiry and qualification
Not every project is a right fit, and we are honest about that early.
When you make an enquiry, we take time to understand the project before advising on the most useful next step. If the fit is clear, we will say so. If it is not, we will say that too.
02 — Vision Session
The paid strategic first step.
We examine the project in full. We look at how each space should feel in the evening, where the opportunities sit, and where the current approach may fall short. You receive a written summary that makes the conversation tangible and the path forward clear.
03 — Concept Design
The full creative and strategic direction for the project.
Layered schemes, spatial hierarchy, material response, scene logic, exterior relationship. Presented clearly before anything is specified or procured.
04 — Realisation and review
We stay involved through delivery where it adds value, and return at completion to commission, adjust, and refine.
The project is finished when it feels right. Not when the electrician leaves.
The right starting point is a conversation.
If you are working on a project where the quality of the environment matters after dark, we would be glad to hear about it.
Tell us briefly what the project involves, who else is working on it, and where it currently stands. We will come back to you with a clear view on whether Chiaroscuro Lighting is the right fit and what the most useful next step would be.
We do not offer free preliminary design. We do offer a serious, considered response to every genuine enquiry.
